The entire Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros ensemble strolled into the Troy High School Auditorium, one-by-one this Labor Day afternoon weekend, and bee-lined for the long staircase at the back of the stage, which led up to the theater department’s wardrobe closet. It was quickly decided that everyone would be required to wear a costume and a hat of some sort. With the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover taking place across the street and through some barricades, on the school’s football field, Alex Ebert — in his three sizes too small gold-laced pumps — and his collection of merrymen and women used chains, a wooden floor and a cadre of instruments to express their version of freedom, joyfulness, and disenchantment.
