The daughter of a traveling book salesman and a piano teacher, Linnea Siggelkow first made her musical mark traversing about Ontario’s DIY scene before self-releasing her debut EP The Fuzz last fall. The Fuzz was released in physical form for the first time last month following the singer’s signing to Fat Possum Records. Today, Linnea Siggelkow, who goes by the moniker Ellis (an artful extension of her initials, “L.S.”), shares the stunning visual accompaniment for her new single, “Something Blue.”
With a voice that’s garnered comparisons to the likes of both Slowdive and Mazzy Star, Ellis guides us through the things lost in the aftermath of a relationship. That ghostly softness manifests itself through chiming synths, resulting in a dazed and dreamy quality that just barely masks the uneasiness and anxiety of the lyrics coursing underneath. Just barely.
The visually stunning video for “Something Blue” (dir. Justin Singer) affords the same kind of emotional in-between; color palettes of powdered pastels transition seamlessly into arresting reds and bold, witchy silvers. Meanwhile, empty restaurants, phantom winds and Lynchian lighting impart an atmosphere that feels as peaceful as it does unsettling.
