Ellis Announces Her Debut LP Born Again, Shares First Single “Fall Apart”

The Toronto-based bedroom-pop artist Ellis announced Wednesday that her debut LP Born Again will be out April 3 via Fat Possum Records. The announcement was made in tandem with the premiere of the first single off the album, “Fall Apart,” and its accompanying music video.

Ellis is the moniker of Linnea Siggelkow, who is a lifelong musician but only really found her voice in her 20s. She is the daughter of a piano instructor, and bought her first guitar at age 12; but her relationship with Christianity proved to be a difficult path to navigate, fueling much of the creative process behind Born Again.

“I grew up Christian and was quite devoted to faith up through my late teens, but I started challenging that once I got to university,” said Siggelkow in a statement. “Since then I’ve been trying to redefine who I am and where I stand and what I think about these things on my own, and that journey very much played into the songwriting on this record.”

Siggelkow’s previous record, the 2018 EP The Fuzz, was self-recorded and -released, and absolutely embodies its name—it is muddled but electric, muted yet sonorous.

Born Again will mark a definite polishing of Ellis’ sound. With her debut LP comes the formation of a full band to support Ellis—a clear departure from her bedroom recording days.

“I really did give this record all of myself, every last bit,” said Siggelkow. “I feel like I’ve found some sort of closure, and a better understanding of all the ways I’ve grown and the things I still have to work on.”

The music video for “Fall Apart” is evocative of reflection and nostalgia. Siggelkow sits in a retro living room, intermittently spliced throughout the video where she walks backwards into bed. She looks at herself in the mirror at one point—contemplating whether to drastically change or remain intact.
