Premiere: Watch Ezra Furman’s Animated Epic “Suck the Blood From My Wound” Video

Ezra Furman describes his latest record, Transangelic Exodus, as a “queer outlaw saga,” and that’s precisely the vibe of his new video for “Suck the Blood From My Wound.” The grotesque and colorful animated tale, directed by artist Beth Jeans Houghton, stars the singer-songwriter as a hospital escapee running from a wild cast of supporting characters.

Of the clip, Houghton says, “The video is a cel animation comprising of hundreds of illustrations, each frame hand drawn. I chose to do individual watercolour paintings for the backgrounds to add more depth and life. I’ve gone through over 120 pencils and my hands have swollen to the size of pizzas.”

Transangelic Exodus, which was released Feb. 9 via Bella Union, casts Furman as a modern day, supernatural hero, and “Suck the Blood From My Wound” is an epic starring vehicle. Furman has described the album as “not a concept record, but almost a novel, or a cluster of stories on a theme, a combination of fiction and a half-true memoir. A personal companion for a paranoid road trip. A queer outlaw saga.”
