Faye Webster Releases New Single “After the First Kiss”
Photo by Pooneh GhanaFaye Webster has put out a new single, “After the First Kiss”—her first step into a new era since the release of her album Underdressed at the Symphony in March of this year. “After the First Kiss” tells of a gentle and enchanting transition into a new love affair. After closing out an ambitious summer festival circuit with a sold-out tour, the track—which she’s been playing for months now—contains all of the hallmarks of a good Faye Webster song, all while still teasing a plethora of new nuances to come. Over a backdrop of glittery chimes and a cascade of tender strings, Webster’s comforting voice caresses the idea of navigating this newfound romance with a careful passion.
The Kyle Ng-directed music video sees Webster and her girlfriend, fellow musician Deb Never, leading teams of inflatable horses into battle on a desolate field, LARP-style. It’s as whimsical and lovely as the song’s imagination itself, and paints a vivid picture of the strange daydreams one encounters when fixating on a new love interest.
In our March cover story about Webster, music editor Matt Mitchell wrote that “Underdressed at the Symphony arrives like a proper companion piece to I Know I’m Funny haha—and a final act to an unofficial, unauthorized album trilogy dating back to Atlanta Millionaires Club. It takes what a Faye Webster record does best, unbending around the convergence of alt-country, indie rock, R&B and pop, and tranquilizes it even more through synthesizers, auto-tune and generous, winsome harmonies. Though it’s not packed with a classical ensemble, Webster and her band have never sounded so much like a clique of players coalescing with their instruments as if it’s their final, vibrant form. The results are warm, comfortable and gentle, and their muse is, simply, each other.” Read the full write-up here.
