Watch FKA twigs’ Spellbinding, Choreographed Short Film, Soundtrack 7
Photo by Matthew Baker/GettyFKA twigs is almost as well known for her dark artistry and magnetic, expert dancing as for her music. Today marks the global release of her new short film Soundtrack 7, which combines all three of these elements we know and love. She calls it an “abstract autobiographical piece”—it strings together elaborately choreographed routines for seven of her songs, along with recitations from Sir Thomas Wyatt’s 16th century sonnet “I Find No Peace.”
She created the routines at a Manchester’s Old Granada Studios residency last year, choreographing, performing and filming them at an incredible rate of one per day. This final result (which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in August) is mesmerizing. With plain costumes and dark lighting, the film focuses our attention on the emotive, tightly choreographed bodies. Most of the time twigs is just one of many dancers onstage; this is her vision, but also comprises beautiful ensemble work.
The songs are taken from twigs’ discography as far back as EP2. There’s a new track in there, too: “What I Wanna,” featuring rapper Lucki Eck$.
The film’s release is timed with the unveiling of FKA twigs’ new website design, which she calls “a creative project in itself.” Check that out here, and watch Soundtrack 7 above.
