Gallery: Robin Pecknold & Allegra Krieger at Bowery Ballroom
Photos by Emilio HerceOn Monday night, Robin Pecknold brought his recent solo tour to New York City for a show at the Bowery Ballroom. What he delivered was a 27-song set spanning not just his Fleet Foxes discography, but a resounding sense of taste—as he cushioned his own original work with that of his heroes, like Elliott Smith (“Pitseleh”), Bobbie Gentry (“Courtyard”), Judee Sill (“Lopin’ Along Thru the Cosmos”) and Joni Mitchell (“Amelia”), the latter of whom he recently accompanied for two performances at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Also on the bill was a longtime Paste favorite: Allegra Krieger. The hometown hero has been criss-crossing the country in support of her new (and very, very good) album, Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine. In their profile of Krieger in September, music editor Matt Mitchell wrote that “Krieger’s music speaks to humanity and what it feels like to be a person during this nick of time and among other people that are, often, destructive but trying their best” and that “Krieger’s records always make sense. When she sings about working in a sports bar, I feel like I can go there. When she sings about traffic lights and birds, I can see them dancing with each other. Thurston Moore used to talk about wanting to make the early Sonic Youth records sound like New York City, be it the noise, the terrifying ambiance or the disorientation of being. I feel that way about Allegra Krieger’s music, too.”
