On this day (Oct. 17) in 1975, Fleetwood Mac played one of their first shows as the classic lineup featuring Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and John and Christine McVie. In July of that year, the once British-blues band released their classic self-titled album and welcomed Americans Nicks and Buckingham into the fold, solidifying the cast of characters we’ve come to know. When that record made its way to American shores, Fleetwood Mac springboarded to musical fame, gaining much pop clout with hits like “Rhiannon,” “Landslide” and “Over My Head.” At this 1975 show, they played several soon-to-be hits, and showed an American audience what the new Fleetwood Mac was all about.
Fleetwood Mac’s October 1975 performance at the now-closed Capitol Theatre in Passiac, N.J. is something of a legendary one. Though a short set, the band squeezed in time for classics like “Rhiannon” and “Landslide” as well as other tracks from Fleetwood Mac including “World Turning” and “I’m So Afraid.” They also cranked out a rare rendition of “Hypnotized” from 1973’s Mystery To Me.
This historic concert highlights Fleetwood Mac on their rise to pop stardom, as noted in Wolfgangs’ liner notes:
