Fly Anakin Announces New Album (The) Forever Dream

Fly Anakin’s rhymes are like fine grit sandpaper, working the rough edges of 90’s New York hip-hop until they shine with southern smoothness. Frank Walton Jr., the face behind the Fly Anakin alias, has been perfecting this technique since 2014, building a massive discography of mixtapes, joint albums, and group projects with his Mutant Academy crew (I seriously couldn’t count all the projects he’s been part of). Despite that mountain of work, Walton only released his debut album Frank in March of 2022, though we did name it one of the best records that month. Today, the Richmond emcee announced his next major release, (The) Forever Dream, due out April 25 via Lex Records, and shared the loaded new single “My N***a” featuring Quelle Chris, $ilkmoney and Big Kahuna OG of Mutant Academy.

(The) Forever Dream, while solidly marked as a Fly Anakin solo project, exudes Walton’s eagerness for collaboration. The album is a partnership with executive producer Quelle Chris, and features a cast of guest appearances from Pink Siifu, BbyMutha, The Alchemist, $ilkmoney, lojii, Nickelus F, Turich Benjy, Demae, Big Kahuna OG and Sycho Sid. Across the album’s 16 tracks, Walton focuses on natural, free-flowing creative expression. The songs are laid back yet driven, commanding attention towards his tangled and tripping rhyme schemes. Chris’s beats are artisanally crafted with Anakin in mind, chopping up deep kicks and slamming snares so he can flow entirely uninhibited.

Meanwhile, “My N***a” is the sound of Griselda running south of the Mason Dixon Line. The drums are drunk, the pianos slurred and pitch shifted— it’s as if the whole of Mutant Academy took a stoned cruise through midtown Atlanta. There’s an undeniable groove to the track, with moments of half-step dissonance and momentary beat cuts to keep the song fresh throughout its five-minute run time. Fly Anakin is at the top of his game in 2025: he’s supremely consistent and absolutely deadly with the pen, but (The) Forever Dream promises to be but a taste of what Frank Walton has to offer.
