Foals have had a busy year. They released their new album, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost—Part 1, back in March, were nominated for the coveted Mercury Prize for it and just a few days ago announced the release date of Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost—Part 2. Today, Aug. 1, we’re getting our first taste of Part 2, the brooding “Black Bull.”
A press release describes the track as “a bruising expression of conflicted masculinity & delusions of grandeur.” That certainly comes across during the song’s brisk runtime—it’s a bass-driven and reverb-heavy ripper that’s about as harsh as anything the band have ever done.
That sound will likely permeate the whole record. Frontman Yannis Phillippakis elaborates in a statement to NME:
It’s a rock record and it definitely carries on the narrative from part one. Part one ended with a lot of fire and destructive imagery, part two is trying to respond to that: How you can continue in the wreckage and through the scorched earth? We’re just excited for people to hear it because it completes the journey of what we’ve made over the last year-and-a-half.
