Girl Scout Announce New EP, Unveil “Boy in Blue”

Our favorite Swedish quartet is back with another instant classic. Girl Scout—Emma Jansson, Evelina Arvidsson Eklind, Per Lindberg and Viktor Spasov—are set to follow up their incredible Real Life Human Garbage EP with Granny Music, a new set of five tracks—many of which were teased earlier this year at SXSW. The only cut from the tracklist that didn’t make its way into their Austin sets was “Boy in Blue,” which has arrived today in all of its glory as a follow-up to previous single “Monster.”

One of the most-entrancing choruses of the year so far (“I’m just the ghost of you / I do whatever you want me to / I can’t believe all the things I’ve been missing from your room,” done in perfect layers), “Boy in Blue” is where Girl Scout have perfected their pop sensibilities. Between Jansson’s cosmic, ’90s alt-rock vocals, Spasov’s mountain-moving riffs, Eklind’s warm, throughline rhythm and Lindberg’s precise percussive backdrop, Girl Scout are a well-oiled machine, and “Boy in Blue” is one of the catchiest, most-enthralling tracks of 2023 so far. There’s even a gentle xylophone layered with a toy piano and synthesizer in there, someplace, that twinkles beautifully. Jansson says about the track: “‘Boy in Blue’ embodies the feeling of being stuck in a relationship. It’s about growing apart and realizing you are completely different people that really don’t have much in common other than your infatuation with each other, and losing your own sense of self during that relationship. It is truly heartbreaking coming to that realization.”
