Tour Diary: Godcaster

After a brief residency at Night Club 101 in New York this spring, Godcaster kept up the momentum on Horsegirl‘s recent summer tour. Our very own Tatiana Tenreyro profiled the band in April, writing that “Godcaster make enthralling performers, with each member, most of whom are multi-instrumentalists, getting their chance to shine as a collective. Their live shows make you fall in love with songs you might have overlooked before; you leave with a new favorite track each time.” Godcaster were kind enough to snap some pics during their trip. Take a look at their tour diary below.

Von Kolk: A month before the tour, our van was stolen and miraculously found a week later. The car thieves left all of our gear in the van and only stole the back seats. In the month leading up to the tour, we’d acquired new benches but in true Godcaster fashion, we had technical difficulties installing the seats. The night before we were supposed to leave for Wisconsin, Jud and Bruce were finally able to fix the van floor and get the seats securely mounted.

Bruce Ebersole: We stopped for a much needed gas/food stop in west Texas and realized nothing was open besides the gas. Trying the door to the convenience store, Jud, Dave, and Ryan found it unlocked and abandoned. It was a strange sight, a seemingly fully stocked gas station store and restaurant that we realized had suffered a bad fire. Then we heard a kitten calling out from some back room. After extensively searching for it we realized it had fallen from the ceiling between the sheetrock of a wall. We kicked down the wall and got him out in a very emotional scene that Dave captured on camera.

Jud: Extremely emotional.

Von: We met John Dwyer about a year ago when we opened up a few dates with Osees. It was great to see him in LA again and he took us to a local climbing gym. None of us had climbed before and we loved it.

Ryan found this horse figurine in the abandoned west Texas gas station where we rescued the kitten. He hid it for a few days and then left it on center stage for Horsegirl to find as they walked onstage to play their set at Teregram Ballroom in LA.

Von: In Seattle, when we were loading out we overheard someone singing a karaoke rendition of ‘My Way’ in a bar adjoining the venue. We had been ending our set with a cover of My Way all tour so we freaked out. Giddy and giggling, us and Horsegirl sprinted over to the next door bar through an attached corridor to catch a glimpse of this performance. We asked the person who had just finished singing, if they had been to the show. They said they hadn’t so it had just been a coincidence. So then we all decided to sing some karaoke.

Jud: We got to see our beautiful genius friend Will Hicks in Portland. Will is a freakout drummer and one of my heroes. He has an insane project called Bl_ank. We love Will Hicks.

Von: Horsegirl got us a trophy, champagne, and a cake that said “We love you Godcaster”, on the last night of tour. It was the sweetest!
