Watch Grace Potter Perform Cuts from New Album Daylight in the Paste Studio

Roots rocker Grace Potter has returned to music after a four-year hiatus, and it’s like she never left.

The singer/songwriter announced last month that her new album Daylight, a follow-up to 2014’s Midnight, will arrive in October. Potter stopped by our NYC studio on Wednesday to play solo acoustic versions of three songs from Daylight, including a stunning take on lead single “Love Is Love,” which even involves a capo-change finesse halfway through. Potter discussed many of the ups and downs that defined the last four years and inspired her new album. She got divorced, got married and had a baby, and took plenty of time for R&R.

“I didn’t know if I was going to anymore, and he inspired me to sing again,” Potter said of her now 20-month-old son.

In addition to “Love is Love,” Potter performed two songs called “Every Heartbreak” and “Shout It Out.” After “Heartbreak,” her husband (and the guy who produced Daylight) Eric Valentine emerged from behind-the-scenes and brought her a freshly tuned guitar.

“This wasn’t a planned song, but I think it will go well in this setting,” she said of “Shout It Out,” the song that inspired her to record the whole album live.

Potter and our NYC studio videographer Brad Wagner discussed everything from Lucius (who appear on the latest Daylight single “Back To Me”) and Laurel Canyon (not far from Potter’s and Valentine’s home in Topanga, Calif.) to grocery shopping and To Kill A Mocking Bird.

“I haven’t been recognized on the street in so long,” Potter joked, before adding, “I love making new fans.”
