Green Day at Wrigley Field 2024 [Photos]
Photos by Josh Druding2024 has been a massive year for Green Day. This winter, they dropped their 14th studio album Saviors and enjoyed a Top 5 appearance on the Billboard 200. In February, their seminal pop-punk classic Dookie turned 30. And, next month, their smash-hit (and Broadway spectacle) American Idiot will celebrate its 20th birthday. For a band who’s been kicking up a fuss since the early 1990s, 2024 has been a rewarding victory lap for Green Day.
On paper, it might seem like a band like Green Day and a venue like Wrigley Field wouldn’t be a good fit. But, if their recent gig at the Chicago Cubs’ famed stadium on August 13th proved one thing, it’s that Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool can turn any place inside out with a little talent and rock ‘n’ roll magic. They welcomed the Linda Lindas, Rancid and the Smashing Pumpkins onto the bill as openers, before hitting the stage themselves and delivering a rousing 37-song performance.
Green Day performed both Dookie and American Idiot in their entirety, bookending the two records with renditions of “The American Dream is Killing Me” and “Bobby Sox” from Saviors. And then, of course, Billie Joe returned to the stage one final time to deliver an encore of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” Paste would wager that Green Day’s Wrigley show will endure as one of Chicago’s best nights of music in 2024.
