Back in January, garage-rock ensemble Guided By Voices announced that they would be releasing their first double album, August By Cake, which would also rank as bandleader Robert Pollard’s 100th studio album, this spring.
Now, less than two weeks out from the record’s release, the band has premiered a new music video for their new song “5º On The Inside” via Tidal. The fact that Pollard still has songs this catchy and evocative is remarkable. It sounds like classic GBV, combining sleazy, oil-slick guitars and a mammoth bass line with a melody that wouldn’t have sounded out of place among David Bowie’s early ‘70s output, not to mention those trumpets that bring the song to life right from the top. All around, it’s an excellent song, begging the question of where Pollard’s been hiding it for the last 30 years.
The video itself, which you can watch even without a Tidal subscription, runs through a number of simply shot scenes, including searching through a record store for Guided By Voices albums and silk-screening t-shirts for Pollard’s Rockathon Records.
