There’s a general, dull threat that lingers in our minds that all of this is fake, isn’t there? There’s a feeling that we’re nothing but constructions of some gentle wizard. Many of us believe in this wizard. He’s something special. He creates misery and enough happiness and joy that we forget all about the misery stuff. He rolls people — with their arms and hearts and their own problems — into our spaces and he watches as we try to be patient with everything that’s working against any of it turning out beautifully.
