Hear Half Waif’s Third and Final Lavender Single, the Gorgeous “Back in Brooklyn”

The last taste we’ll have of Lavender—the forthcoming Cascine Records debut from Brooklyn-based synth-pop trio Half Waif—before its April 27 release is “Back in Brooklyn,” a stark and hypnotic piano ode to homecoming.

The single explores the connection between identity and place, considering the ways in which time and distance can affect such ties: “I’m casting off my half-empty shell / Through all that I’ve lost, now I know myself so well,” Nandi Rose Plunkett sings over a cascade of keys. “The farther away I walk, the more I’m a whisper. / Listen for me now. / You’ve gotta listen for me now.”

We’ll certainly be listening for Lavender—we highlighted both of its previous singles, “Torches” and “Keep It Out,” as Daily Doses. You can preorder the album here and revisit its details here.

Plunkett expanded on “Back in Brooklyn” in an essay for Talkhouse, recalling both the changes in her life that inspired it, and the writing and recording process. “Returning to the piano, which I began learning at six but shied away from for years, to write ‘Back in Brooklyn’ gave me comfort,” she writes. “As a way to honor that space, my bandmates and I purposefully made it the most naked track on the record, with no sonic baubles to disguise or distract from the heart of the song.”
