Hosono is perhaps best known in the U.S. for his work in the wildly influential 1970s synth pop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takashi. However, his solo career has been much longer and covered much more musical territory, with acclaimed albums dealing in everything from folk rock to ambient techno. In recent years Hosono has also built something of a cult following among contemporary indie artists, most notably Vampire Weekend, whose recent single “2021” sampled the Hosono song “Talking,” and Mac Demarco, who recently released covers of Hosono’s “Honey Moon” and “Tropical Dandy,” and whose album art for 2 was inspired by Hosono House.
Five of Hosono’s solo records were also reissued by Light in The Attic last year, including Hosono House, Paraiso, Cochin Moon, Philharmony and omni Sight Seeing, marking their first release outside Japan. Hosono has also announced a pair of U.S. dates this summer to accompany Hochono House, including a stop at New York City’s Gramercy Theater on May 29 and another at The Mayan in Los Angeles on June 3. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. local time, with pre-sales open now.
