Heavy Meddo, the electrifying indie rock project spearheaded by the legendary Bill Baird, is making waves yet again. Made up of Baird, drummer DB Tamir, multi-instrumentalist Jordan Johns, and White Denim’s virtuoso Jonathan Horne, it’s safe to say that the Texas-based group has an extraordinary amount of experience under their collective belt. The band’s latest release, “La Mer,” is featured on a split 7” with Queen Serene’s “Glitter Disco.” Clocking in at nearly six minutes, “La Mer” journeys through post-rock’s expansive landscape, encapsulating Heavy Meddo’s distinctive sound.

Fusing the fuzzy psychedelia of krautrock with blistering guitar shreds and a touch of Texan swagger, “La Mer” delivers a kaleidoscopic listening experience. Imagine Stereolab’s hypnotic precision meeting the anarchic spirit of the Butthole Surfers, all wrapped in a sound that is uniquely Heavy Meddo. “La Mer” is a sonic sampler of Heavy Meddo’s strengths, all charisma and genuine glee, jumping between languages and genres with ease. The band’s personality shines through in everything they do, from their bio (they enjoy “lingering fumes of a youthful infatuation with James Joyce” and “postrock/postpunk/post-using-the-word-post”) to the excitement that imbues each and every song, and “La Mer” is no exception.

As Silas Reed writes in a press release, “I’ve seen Heavy Meddo get so taken away in their performances, that they’ve cleaned the floor with their backs, scraping and crawling and hovering on the brink of total collapse, only to claw back and finish the tune right on the dime. I’ve danced, laughed, cried, and banged my head into next week as the goods. […] The ‘heads’ know, and to see Heavy Meddo is to understand. They are just a really good band, one of the best in Texas right now. Layers of noise, a strong beat, good chords, improv, and a sense of joy.”
