The band are also performing at a Paste-sponsored showcase at New Colossus Festival in New York City on March 13, and you can buy tickets here.
“Be My Friend,” which follows their previous single “Nothing,” is the kind of bittersweet lo-fi rock to be cherished—it’s equal parts soul-stirring and charming. “Nothing is the same as when you were my friend,” sings lead vocalist Jamie Batten with passionate oomph in a slightly muddied tone. When paired with gleaming guitars and a perky, bucolic keyboard outro, it feels like a ‘90s cult classic that never was.
“Lyrically ‘Be My Friend’ makes a joke of trying to impress someone you admire,” Batten says. “We wanted it to be an ironic song that pokes fun at awkward social situations and the funny ways we act just to be liked or feel accepted.”
