Horseshoes and Hand Grenades is bluegrass music as it’s truly meant to be. The instruments are right, the voices are right, and the spirit behind the music is as Midwestern as it gets. There’s nothing better than seeing a group of close friends get around a microphone and play their hearts out.Within the band there’s an obvious bond, a brotherhood that seems unshakable. It looks like they’re having so much fun that it almost makes you wish you could join the band. They’re smiling, telling jokes and drinking stories, and defining what folk music sounds like in the modern age. In this session the group is playing songs from their latest album “The Ode,” a culmination and expansion on all the music they’ve made up until now. There’s more than just bluegrass here; each member brings in a different mood, a unique style, and their ulterior musical influences into the songs they write. As you watch and listen, it kind of seems like no one is really in charge of the band, but also that no one needs to be. This band is at their best when they’re unbridled and having a good time. Horseshoes and Hand Grenades don’t see genre as a box, but rather as a frame they can use to paint any picture they like—and paint they do. Their skill with storytelling produces some of the best lyrics in bluegrass music today.
