Maria Lindén and Fredrik Balck of the Stockholm, Sweden, band I Break Horses put us in the mood to retreat. They make us long for the winter days when the wind is howling up fiercely and everywhere you walk you’re slopping through ripples of slushy snow. We shouldn’t want those days, especially when everything’s sunny and we’re able to run through the sprinklers, but we do. They make us dream of heading back to somewhere in the past where everything’s already been claimed and figured out, where all of the reasons make sense because they’ve already been given and they’ve already checked out. There’s nothing left so unsaid that it feels like future flight, or a whiteout. Lindén sings with a tone of someone who’s been made to hurt, who’s been floored and who’s had the misfortune of having it all repeat. Then the hurt softens and it places her here.
