Get behind me, Satan: Jack White has swooped in to offer music duo Twin Temple the opening slot for his September 29 gig at the Hollywood Palladium, after they were dropped from Charley Crockett’s upcoming tour due to the country singer’s distaste for satanic imagery. Twin Temple perform songs like “Lucifer, My Love” and “Let’s Have a Satanic Orgy.”
Crockett initially had Twin Temple booked as openers for various dates of his tour, along with Kashus Culpepper, Sierra Hull, Margo Price, Lee Fields, Honky Tonkin’ Queens, Wild Horses, and Pony Bradshaw. “I thought they were like Black Sabbath,” Crockett told Rolling Stone in a statement via his rep, “but they ain’t. Not today, Satan.” He later doubled down on his Facebook page, posting a photo of Johnny Cash with the caption: “If they did it to Jesus, imagine what they’ll do to you.” (This, seemingly, in reference to the crucifixion.)
It seemed that Satan had other plans, however. Shortly after Crockett’s post, Jack White made his own statement on Instagram with the message “Twin Temple, would you like to open my show in L.A. on September 29th at the Hollywood Palladium? Let me know.” He ended the caption with “Get in front of me Satan!,” a reference to the 2005 White Stripes album Get Behind Me Satan, which was a reference to Matthew 16:23.
Twin Temple responded in the comments of the post, saying: “Unholy hell…. Sir Jack, you have no idea what this means to us. Lifelong fans—‘Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground’ was one of the first songs I (Alex) ever learned on guitar. We were actually planning on coming to this show. It would be a most infernal pleasure to play the devil’s music with you.” Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis chimed in with her support, commenting, “Viva Anton LaVey!” referring to the late founder of the Church of Satan.
The show is one of two White will play at the Hollywood Palladium as a part of his North American tour, which began yesterday (July 10) in Washington, D.C., and is set to conclude at the end of November. Twin Temple will be supporting heavy metal band Danzig on tour in September before joining White in Los Angeles at the end of the month. Charley Crockett is in the middle of a tour supporting his latest album, Age of the Ram.
