Exclusive: Jahnah Camille Releases New Single “sit with you (pain)”

Today, Birmingham singer-songwriter Jahnah Camille has unveiled “sit you (pain),” the second single from her forthcoming, Alex Farrar-produced EP My sunny oath! (due June 13 via Winspear). The track “is about cutting someone out of your life who you still care for deeply,” Camille shared in a press release. “All of your critiques and drawbacks are still secondary for the love that you have. I wanted to make a habit of doing things that were good for me even if they hurt.”

Listen to “sit with you (pain)” and check out our exclusive Q&A with Jahnah Camille below.

Paste Magazine: What’s the musical environment in Birmingham like, and how did you fit into it when you were starting out?

Jahnah Camille: I started playing shows when I was really young so I didn’t really fit in in any sense. I started playing acoustic sets with local indie bands. As the local sound shifted away from indie and more to different variations of hardcore, I found myself playing more shows with out of town bands who made similar music to mine while still being in the community with local bands and championing one another.

What inspired you to write “sit with you (pain)”?

“sit with you (pain)” was inspired by when I went no contact with someone who I felt mostly empathetic for. I had to change the narrative in my songwriting and in my life from being insecure to doing the hard thing so it was really important for me to write.

How does “sit with you (pain)” and “what do you do?” set up what listeners can expect from the rest of the EP?

Listeners can expect to hear a much more empowered side of me.

Your songs oscillate between many genre textures, be it shoegaze, alt-rock, or touches of indie-folk. How does your sonic palette help you tell a story?

The production for my music feels like a mosaic of all the music I’ve ever truly, truly loved so I feel like with each project, you can hear a new layer of what I’ve been personally connecting with over the past year or so.

You’re going out on tour with Blondshell soon. How are you feeling about it?

I’m passing out multiple times a day, I’m so excited!
