Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears Has a Big, Bushy Mustache (and a New Music Video)

In anticipation of the release of his debut self-titled solo album on Friday, Scissor Sisters’ frontman Jake Shears has something else to share: one big, bushy mustache—and, frankly, we at Paste are here for it.

Shears sports the facial hair in a new music video for the song “Big Bushy Mustache.” Donning fingerless gloves and a leather jacket, the mustachioed Shears looks like an intersection of the Village People and your mother’s raciest Tom Selleck fantasy … but, like, in the best way.

The music video leans into campy silliness. If incorporating enough phallic imagery to resemble a Freudian fever dream weren’t enough, the shot of Shears laying across the hood of a car in platform boots singing, “I want a pornstar handlebar / And a neon pink Mustang as my second car / It takes a bushy mustache to show them who you really are,” certainly does the trick.

Near the end of the video, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme makes a guest appearance decked out in a gigantic (and presumably adhesive) mustache of his own. Homme and Shears are longtime friends: “I think he’s an amazing man,” said Shears in an interview with Rolling Stone. “And musically, I think he’s one of the best alive.”

“Big Bushy Mustache” is the third song released off Shears’ new album, following “Sad Song Backwards” and “Creep City.” The solo project is his first since the Scissor Sisters’ 2012 LP Magic Hour. Watch the music video below.
