Jamie xx Releases Stunning New Video for “Gosh”

Last year, Jamie xx, one-third of The xx and a talented producer on his own, released his great debut record, In Colour.

One of the album’s singles, “Gosh,” received an accompanying music video featuring a slow crawl over a planet’s surface taken from NASA images.

Today, Jamie xx has shared a new video for the song. It’s directed by Romain Gavras, the man behind the incendiary visuals for Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” as well as the car stunt madness of M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” video.

Gavras brings this same eye for the extravagant to this visual for “Gosh.” The video takes place in the Chinese pop-up town of Tianducheng, which features a 300-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower and Parisian-style architecture. Within the abandoned town, a man with albinism (Hassan Kone) dressed in all white is celebrated by a massive clan of disciples.

While the “Gosh” video does lack the pyrotechnics of Gavras’ other works, they aren’t missed. The cinematography is breathtaking and brings a sense of scope and wonder to the mysterious goings-on of the video. A total cast of 400 extras were called upon for the video, with zero CGI used.
