Janelle Monáe’s New App Wipes Your Spotify Playlists in the Spirit of Dirty Computer

Janelle Monáe—singer, rapper, queen of the androids—has unveiled a new app that “cleans” any of your Spotify playlists by wiping down all the songs and replacing them with her recently released album Dirty Computer.

Monáe’s latest album Dirty Computer dropped alongside a full-length film of the same name in late April. The album, which is part of Monáe’s afrofuturistic album anthology, tells the story of non-conforming androids who fall along a spectrum of sexuality (the dirty computers) in a dystopian future. The dirty computers are inevitably cleaned—or, rather, reprogrammed. With Monáe’s new promotional tool, now any of your Spotify playlists can undergo the same treatment.

Dirty Computer is Monáe’s first new album in four years. The album features guest performances by the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Zoë Kravitz, Pharrell Williams and (possible future astronaut herself, if Elon Musk was serious about that ticket to Mars) Grimes.

Watch the full Dirty Computer “emotion picture” below, and download Monáe’s Spotify-cleansing app here. But watch out! It really works.
