Watch Jason Isbell Cover Allmans’ “Midnight Rider” and “Whipping Post” in NYC
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit made a tour stop at New York’s Beacon Theatre last night. The Beacon, of course, was home to countless Allman Brothers Band shows over the years—it was more or less their home in the Big Apple—so Isbell and Co. took the opportunity to pay tribute to the recently departed Gregg Allman with covers of “Midnight Rider” and “Whipping Post.”
“Midnight Rider” was handled primarily by fiddler (and Isbell’s wife) Amanda Shires, with Isbell accompanying on guitar and vocals. Later, the whole band ripped through a raucous version of Allman’s classic “Whipping Post.” You can watch fan-shot clips of both below.

And while you’re here, check out former Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks’s tribute performance of “Midnight Rider” (along with Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean and Charles Kelly from Lady Antebellum) from the CMT Awards on June 8, here.
