Indie-pop powerhouse Melina Duterte shares more new music today: Pirouette, a 7-inch featuring outtakes from the Everybody Works sessions, is out now on Polyvinyl. Jay Som has also released the b-side, a lovely jam titled “O.K., Meet Me Underwater.”

“I wrote ‘O.K., Meet Me Underwater’ entirely around one of my favorite drum grooves—there’s just something so funky and special about that beat,” says Duterte. “The general theme of the song is about the pain and acceptance of change within interpersonal relationships.”

“O.K., Meet Me Underwater” opens with a cascading Duterte guitar line that soon drops away, supplanted by her hushed vocals, steady bass and that show-stealing percussion. The song transforms in unpredictable and exciting ways, rippling and changing like liquid. “If you’re feeling okay, meet me underwater,” Duterte urges, an invitation to immersion.

Jay Som’s Everybody Works was her second LP and Paste’s top album of 2017, with our Editor-in-Chief Josh Jackson hailing the record as “personal and vulnerable and, above all, beautiful.” No word yet on Duterte’s plans for a full-length follow-up, but any such record would rocket to the top of our most-anticipated list. Keep those fingers crossed, folks.

In the meantime, Duterte has a handful of U.S. tour dates on tap, including shows with her Polyvinyl label-mate Japanese Breakfast and an Ireland show supporting The National this summer. You can find Jay Som’s full tour slate right here.
