Jay Som Announces Pirouette, 7″ Featuring New Songs From Everybody Works Sessions

Jay Som, aka singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Melina Duterte, put out Paste’s top album of 2017, the utterly wonderful Everybody Works. So we’re thrilled to relay that Jay Som will soon release a new 7-inch, Pirouette, featuring new songs from the Everybody Works sessions. You can listen to the title track now ahead of Pirouette’s Jan. 26 release.

“Both of these tracks were made during the spring of 2016—the first demo stages for Everybody Works,” Duterte explained in a statement. “They were fun to write and record but felt out of place on the track list during the finalization of the album. These tracks remain close to my heart and I’m really grateful they’re finally out in the world.”

We can’t imagine that “Pirouette” missed the Everybody Works cut by much. The song opens with a sunny, steady chord progression, welcoming in Duterte’s soft vocals and eventually dwindling to only drums and bass before culminating in a lovely, yet volcanic guitar outro. The song, Pirouette’s A-side, is backed by a track titled “O.K., Meet Me Underwater.”

Jay Som has a handful of tour dates on the horizon, mostly made up of a series of West Coast shows with her Polyvinyl label-mate Japanese Breakfast. She’s also set to open for The National in Dublin, Ireland in June. Tickets for Jay Som’s upcoming shows are available here.

We highlighted Jay Som as The Best of What’s Next last March. “Jay Som is a complex bubble of indie rock filled with foundational personal developments,” wrote Nina Corcoran. “She just happens to hold it together in a way that makes her rise to fame seem effortless—the way all greats do.”
