Jay Som Serves up the Ultimate Chill Pill on Adult Swim Single “Simple”

Melina Duterte, better known as Jay Som, shared her new single “Simple” yesterday (Feb. 18), serving as the 26th installment of Adult Swim Singles. Past Adult Swim collaborators include Wye Oak, Future Islands, Hatchie and Speedy Ortiz, so the L.A.-based artist is in excellent company.

Jay Som’s last musical release was the 2018 EP she created with Justus Proffit, Nothing’s Changed, which saw the Bay Area-native dip her toes into everything from folk to arena rock. Now, Duterte returns to the indelible combination of hi-fi and lo-fi sounds that makes her dreamy indie-pop oh-so-listenable. On “Simple,” the multi-instrumentalist crafts an ethereal sonic landscape by layering swelling strings, gentle harmonies, lo-fi drum machine and breezy guitar. Duterte’s voice echoes throughout with captivating delicacy and clarity, like a vast stained glass window.

It’s hopefully a taste of what’s to come, as Duterte is working on her next album after her 2017 record Everybody Works, Paste’s top album of that year. Listen to “Simple” below and read Paste’s 2017 interview with Duterte here.
