Jim James Shares “Here In Spirit,” Hopeful First Single from Forthcoming Solo Album Eternally Even

Today, the My Morning Jacket frontman is back with another political track, “Here In Spirit,” the first single from his forthcoming solo album Eternally Even.
James calls the song a response to the Orlando shootings: “It’s […] about speaking out and trying to be there for people in spirit even if you can’t be at every rally and battle. We have such a duty to speak out for equality and for each other.”
James’ voice echoes over low, atmospheric synthesizers as he sings:
The stone is thrown
It’s coming fast
The next thing you know
It’s crashing through the glass
Now we’re down on our knees picking up the scraps
Whatever it takes we’re gonna build it back
Dissonance slowly creeps in, and just before the three-and-a-half minute mark, the music fractures in a controlled glitch, evoking the breaking glass described in the lyrics. The song then continues at a slower pace—but it continues. That’s the metaphorical point.
