Joanna Sternberg Releases “Stockholm Syndrome”

Monopolist of down-home heartache Joanna Sternberg is back with the final single from their LP I’ve Got Me, out this Friday via Fat Possum. In typical style, “Stockholm Syndrome” is an arresting mixture of comforting, accessible lyricism and devastating emotional depth: “I begged you not to leave / How will I ever believe / Anyone again, strangers, lovers, or friends…” Sternberg sings. The song’s pretty and simple instrumentals and no-frills intonation mark it as quintessentially Sternberg, and the childlike honesty of the song’s progression rubs salt in the wound of its topic: The slow death rattle of an ill-fated relationship.
