Jouska is one of the best active alt-rock bands going right now, and they’re definitely a band to keep your eye on if you like being hip to the next big thing. Their music dabbles in emo, touches upon post-rock, and lands on intricately crafted songs that express a truly unique voice in an age of conformity. Jouska is dynamic: sparse arrangements burn into explosive climaxes and whispers turn to shouts. They’re a band that confidently embodies those contradictions, so their music sounds closer to a true human experience rather than some imaginary, psychedelic world. Beauty and disgust are equally present at all times. The darkness in the music is not all-knowing, ever present, enveloping; instead it’s tangible and digestible, an acquaintance to converse with. The songs are sprawling; they’re songs that tear the pop song structure to shreds, and favor harsh ambivalence over clear-eyed emotive wailing. Jouska is an exercise in collage, an exercise in catching fleeting feelings and drawing them out—the soundtrack to staying home. With a unique singing voice and equally interesting instrumentals, allow Jouska to spread their shadows into your daily music intake. You’ll be glad you found them.
