Listen to Julien Baker’s Woozy Cover of Bleachers’ “Everybody Lost Somebody”

As part of an ongoing collection of covers from Bleachers’ 2017 record Gone Now, Julien Baker has added her signature sound to “Everybody Lost Somebody.”

Baker’s cover is decidedly more unsteady and downtempo than the erstwhile upbeat original. She emphasizes the melancholy in Jack Antonoff’s lyrics, layering textured vocals over a repetitious sample pulled from the original track. Baker throws her guitar in the mix, too, effectively turning the synth-pop song into a haunting meditation on mortality as the song builds to an understated climax.

Terrible Thrills, Vol. 3, the collection of Bleachers covers from which “Everybody Lost Somebody” is pulled, is being released in a series of 7”s. Grab one while you can and/or listen to the cover below, and revisit Baker’s 2016 stop at the Paste Studio further down. You can read our review of Baker’s 2017 opus Turn Out The Lights right here.
