Kacey Musgraves Releases Disco-Inspired New Single, “High Horse”

Kacey Musgraves has revealed the third single from her forthcoming album, Golden Hour, out March 30 via MCA Nashville.

Golden Hour is Musgraves’ fourth studio album and her new single, “High Horse” was premiered by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 as his World Record on Apple Music. The song follows her two previously released singles, “Space Cowboy” and “Butterflies.

Co-written by Musgraves with Trent Dabbs and Thomas Schleiter, “High Horse” is smooth and unexpectedly slick pop song with hints of disco in the song’s beat and hints of country in Musgraves’ twangy lead vocals and banjo playing. She says of the song’s disco inspiration on Beats 1, “Oh my gosh. It is the most fun ever. I was on a huge Bee Gees kick when I was making this album. I was intrigued by the thought of a world where Bee Gees meets country music. These days I only see music as falling into two genres: good or bad. You won’t find someone on this earth that loves country music more than me, but that also doesn’t define all my musical taste.”

Musgraves also addressed the meaning behind the song’s lyrics, “We all know that character that is a little high on themselves. They’re a little bit arrogant and I had this title sitting around for a long time and I have my own ideas about who it’s about, but everyone has that character in their life.”

Musgraves is set to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 29, The Today Show on March 30 and The Ellen DeGeneres Show on April 4. In support of her new album, Musgraves has announced her upcoming tour, “Oh, What A World: Tour.” The headlining tour will kick off this fall in Europe, including London’s Wembley Arena with additional dates to be announced. Musgraves will also join Harry Styles on his U.S. tour this summer.
