Spike Jonze Directs Live, One-Take Music Video for Karen O & Danger Mouse’s “Woman” on Colbert: Watch

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and super-producer Danger Mouse just welcomed in the release of their collaborative triumph Lux Prima. Now, the duo has teamed up on The Late Show with another illustrious pairing: Spike Jonze and the live, one-take taping of the music video for the twosome’s fiercely unrepentant anthem, “Woman.”

While shot entirely in black and white, the video’s ambiance is anything but monochromatic. A legion of all-woman dancers (including a special appearance by Lady Bird’s Beanie Feldstein) guide the camera along, movements unsettled and frantic. Their eyes are armed, wielding mischievous, we-know-something-you-don’t sparkles. They surround Karen O in a way that’s unclear if they’re in cahoots with her or puppeteering her. They leap atop a gutted car, they bewitch the audience into their choreography, they provoke the performers, all live, and all in one take.

It’s a mesmerizingly fun spin on Blair Witch Project recollections, and exactly the kind of visual something as punchy and potent as “Woman” deserves.
