Katy Perry, noodle-slurping Coachella attendee, space explorer, and girlfriend of a former Canadian Prime Minister, is getting a little multilingual with it. The popstar will perform as part of Mexico’s Feria Nacional Potosina, or FENAPO, lineup this August; in an announcement on Tuesday night, she told fans she was excited to perform a “free show for all my Mexican KatyGatos.”
FENAPO, an annual state fair held in San Luis Potosí, is well-known for its international headliners and lack of cost. Accompanying Perry will be a real who’s-who of “Wait, what?”: Mötley Crüe, Yandel, Kenia Os, Santa Fe Klan, and DJ Bizarrap. Last year, Marilyn Manson headlined the performance, a decision that religious groups objected to due to Manson’s Satanist aesthetic and that women’s groups derided following abuse allegations against Manson by his ex-fiancée and other women.
Perry herself is no stranger to Spanish controversy: the artist ruffled feathers when she shot a music video for her song “Lifetimes” on a protected Balearic beach in 2024. One of her representatives alleged the crew had gotten “verbal approval” for the video, but Balearic Islands officials stated that Perry had failed to seek the requisite authorization to film in an environmentally sensitive area. This debacle was perhaps an enormous ruse to draw attention from the fact that “Lifetimes,” like the rest of her forgettable 2024 album 143, was co-produced by alleged sex criminal Dr. Luke.
But reconnecting with her Spanish roots wasn’t enough for Perry. In a video accompanying the announcement, she waded cautiously into the waters of internetspeak when she told fans there would be “lots of joymaxxing” at the concert. If someone would kindly make a Venn diagram of Katygatos and users of Clavicular’s vernacular, I’d like to see it. The one person in the middle might be Perry herself.
