Japanese psych-rock collective Kikagaku Moyo are set to release their fourth studio album Masana Temples on Oct. 5 via Guruguru Brain and they’ve just unveiled the second single, “Dripping Sun.”
This new single follows the release of their first single, “Gatherings,” and the near eight-minute single opens with intoxicating, cascading waves of instrumentals. The track builds with a groovy wah-wah guitar interlude that turns into a full-on psych jam before it retreats back into a delicate, quiet moment of psych-folk. Then, the track amps up with a thrashing storm of acid-rock guitars and as soon as you think they’re going to end on this incredible high, they drop the tempo yet again and close with soft, humble Japanese vocals. It’s truly a painfully crafted psychedelic rollercoaster ride, and it’s quite a rare feat to pull off all these genre and tempo shifts without losing emotion or focus.
According to a press release, the word “masana” from the band’s new album title is a fictional word created by the band “to express a Utopian feeling; an existence where everything can interact harmoniously and offer inspiration and understanding.” The album was inspired by their world travels and the months they’ve spent on tour, as well as their trip to Lisbon to record the album with jazz musician Bruno Pernadas.
