A day after Vice President Mike Pence announced that he had left Sunday’s NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Indianapolis Colts after several 49ers players knelt in protest during the National Anthem, reactions from the sports and entertainment worlds were decidedly unfavorable. The gist: Pence is a hollow excuse for a leader who flew all the way to Indianapolis—at great taxpayer expense—just to make a premeditated display of his and Donald Trump’s displeasure over black athletes calling attention to oppression.
Pence tweeted after the game that he “will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” echoing Trump’s remarks a few weeks ago that NFL teams should cut any player who takes a knee during the anthem. Pence had flown from Las Vegas to Indianapolis for the game, then to Los Angeles. CNN estimated that the total cost of the excursion was about $242,500.
After the game, 49ers safety Eric Reid called Pence’s anti-protest protest a “PR stunt,” since Pence presumably knew that members of the 49ers would kneel during the anthem, as they have all season.
