Australia appears to have its own Adam Friedland, and her name is Nikki Osborne. The comedian hosted the country’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, on her podcast Bush Deep last week, and managed to convince him to play a game of “shag, marry, kill” with popular Australian female celebrities. Osborne, who proclaims herself to be “wildly inappropriate,” asked the Labor Party leader to play the game with Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, and Rhonda Burchmore—who, to Osborne’s credit, were all born within five years of Albanese.
The politician, while sipping on whiskey, initially demurred, reminding Osborne he’d married Jodie Haydon just six months prior. “But if it goes tits up?” Osborne asked. “Oh, Kylie, clearly,” Albanese quickly responded. Osborne inquired further, “You’d marry Kylie? And shag her? And date her?” Albanese replied, “All of the above. She’s terrific.” He proceeded to describe his sex life with Haydon, which apparently often occurs “after the footy.”
Minogue is terrific, but Albanese’s answer was not. Sarah Henderson, a Senator in the opposing Liberal Party, called the Prime Minister’s comments “whisky-fueled,” “disrespectful to women,” and “embarrassing to Australians” on X. She credited Osborne with “skewering” Albanese and tricking him into going “into the gutter” with the journalist. “I apologize unequivocally for the comments,” Albanese said in a statement yesterday.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles insisted that Albanese was not sexist, and that Albanese is “utterly committed” to women’s rights. Minogue has yet to comment on the apparent offer, as she appears to be busy performing with Snow Patrol.
