Lambrini Girls’ singer arrested after warning promoters of “dodgy” male musician

Phoebe Lunny, singer and guitarist for the UK punk group Lambrini Girls, revealed on the A View From A Bridge podcast yesterday that she was arrested after attempting to warn concert and festival promoters of a male musician she believed to be “dodgy.” The podcast’s format invites guests to share personal stories by speaking into a red telephone while standing on a bridge. Riz Ahmed, shame’s Charlie Steen, and Cynthia Erivo were previous guests.

In Lunny’s episode, she recalled how, while going for a run, police informed her that a harassment complaint had been filed against her. Officers instructed the singer to come to the police station and, upon her arrival at the station, she was arrested. “This happened because I took the liberty of emailing a handful of promoters, saying, ‘Hey, I’ve just seen you’ve got this band on your bill, there’s a guy in it, he’s known to be really dodgy, if you want your gig to be a safe space for women, take him off the bill.’” The anonymous musician was reportedly alerted about Lunny’s emails and reported them to law enforcement.

Lunny claimed she was told she could face up to six months in prison, though the charges against her were dropped after she wrote an apology letter to the “dodgy” male musician in question. “Even laws which are in place to protect women can be exploited and used for a man’s benefit,” Lunny said. On social media, she clarified that she had intentionally avoided naming anyone and was not “encouraging others to find out names that could get me in trouble.” 

Lambrini Girls has faced its share of setbacks this year: the band was forced to cancel its Coachella appearances and reschedule a North American tour after Lunny suffered a fractured neck and acute brain injury in Australia. The group now plans to tour in the fall.
