Commodores alum and balladeer Lionel Richie was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday night after suffering a spell in which he felt “dizzy” and “strange” mid-concert in St. Paul, Minnesota. The singer, who recently turned 77, abruptly sat down on stage during a performance of “Dancing on the Ceiling.” “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down!” he joked with audience members, appearing visibly fatigued. Richie moved to the piano for a rendition of “Three Times a Lady,” but stepped away afterward for what fans initially believed would be a brief intermission. After 40-ish minutes, Richie’s saxophonist, Dino Soldo, came on stage to tell fans the singer was not feeling well enough to continue the show.
TMZ claims that Richie was met by paramedics backstage at the concert, who took him to the hospital in an ambulance as a “precautionary measure.” The singer’s current condition is unknown, and he has not updated his social media platforms since Wednesday night. The concert marked the beginning of a tour that will take the singer through major North American cities along with soul veterans Earth, Wind & Fire. Richie’s next scheduled concert is today in Chicago, but it remains unclear whether he will be able to perform.
