Forty years ago, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure hosted a massive benefit concert that took place on both sides of the Atlantic, at London’s Wembley Stadium and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, to raise money for the onging famine in Ethiopia. Live Aid, broadcast across the world on stations like BBC in the UK and ABC in the U.S., featured some of the biggest names in pop music, including Paul McCartney, U2, Queen, David Bowie, Madonna, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, and Mick Jagger. It also reunited groups The Beach Boys; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Black Sabbath; and Led Zeppelin—performing for the first time since the death of drummer John Bonham.
Check out a pair of interviews with Live Aid founder Bob Geldof, followed by a selection of performances from the Philadelphia portion of Live Aid in 1985.
