Liz Phair Announces October Release Date for New Memoir Horror Stories

Indie-rock legend Liz Phair is releasing a memoir about her life and career titled Horror Stories, and it comes out through Random House on Oct. 8. She took to Twitter to reveal the release date and cover art on Thursday night.

The memoir will cover a series of stories from Phair’s life or people around her that were traumatic or affecting in some way. The book’s fragmented, deeply personal style sets out to find universal truths in unique, intimate events. An Amazon synopsis of Horror Stories describes it as “the confessions of a friend, a book that gathers up all of our isolated shames, bringing us together in our shared imperfection, our uncertainty and our cowardice, smashing the stigma of not being in control. But most importantly, Horror Stories is a memoir that asks questions of how we feel about the things that have happened to us, how we cope with regret and culpability, and how we break the spell of those things, leeching them of their power over us.”

Phair soared to critical and commercial success in 1993 with the release of her debut album Exile in Guyville, a record that was regarded as a masterpiece of brash, lo-fi indie rock and pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in popular music. She’s released five more albums since then, her most recent full-length being 2010’s Funstyle. Phair also released a box set last year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Exile in Guyville titled Girly-Sound to Guyville. Her songs “Supernova” and “Don’t Have Time” were nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards in 1995 and 1996, respectively.
