Melissa Jefferson, better known as Lizzo, is no stranger to the music community, with multiple acclaimed independent releases, including 2015 Paste favorite Big GRRRL Small World. The Minnesota-based rapper is shaking things up, however, with the release announcement of her highly anticipated major-label debut, Coconut Oil, due out Oct. 7 via Atlantic Records.
The unveiling of Lizzo’s new project is highlighted by her funny yet fierce new single, “Phone,” which discusses the all-too-relatable experience of trying to find your phone at the end of a long night out. The track features sparse instrumentation, relying heavily on hard-hitting beats and bass lines.
Lizzo will celebrate Coconut Oil with a handful of upcoming live dates, including a headline “Red Bull Sound Selects” Chicago performance on Sept. 23, as well as sets at next month’s Austin City Limits Festival, slated for Oct. 2 and Oct. 9.
