This morning, Providence, Rhode Island five-piece Lookers have announced their debut album, Deeper. The release is set to arrive April 25 via Almost Ready Records, and the band has shared its lead single, “Bury You Under.” In the 2010s, vocalist/poet Muggs Fogarty and guitarist Rafay Rashid joined forces as a songwriting team before recruiting bassist/violinist Florence Wallis, guitarist Nick Politelli and drummer Bryan Fielding to round out their group.
Deeper was recorded at Big Nice Studio with producer Bradford Krieger, and “Bury You Under” comes into view like this big, anxious texture of drones and held guitar notes. It builds slowly into this glitchy, thrashing climax that, eventually, dissolves into this aching, choppy coda. You can hear every band member filing into the arrangement, especially Fogarty, whose vocal washes the track into something sinister and uneasy. Here’s what Lookers had to say about the song:
“Bury You Under” is described as a vengeful war cry. What inspired the song’s narrative?
A song can be a vessel for ugly feelings and dark wishes. A song can transmute silence into connection. Revenge fantasies can remix powerlessness. I wanted catharsis, to say “I see you” to the gamut.
How does “Bury You Under” set the tone for what listeners can expect from Deeper as a whole?
Like “Bury You Under,” the songs on Deeper aren’t shying away from the stickiness and complexity of human connection—its successes and failures. Expect textured layers of influence, explosive energy, and danceable drive.
