AI glasses, the new fun thing for friendless people who enjoy going viral for bad things that are definitely their fault, have been in the discourse since Meta launched a new campaign for its product last month. Kylie Jenner pouted with the clunky frames and Ninajirachi was the advertisement’s soundtrack, creating the troubling question: Does Nina really want to fuck her computer, or just another person wearing a computer? We already have Oura rings.
Lorde refuses to hit us with such head-scratchers. During her appearance at Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival last Thursday, she excoriated the new apparel genre, despite Ray-Ban Meta sponsoring the event. (Jennie, one of the festival’s headliners, is the face of its new campaign.) Prancing across the stage, Lorde announced, “Increasingly in our world it gets harder and harder to know what is real. You don’t know if someone is wearing sunglasses or if they’re wearing those fucked up fucking… Can I just say, for the record, ‘fuck the glasses.’ Don’t get the glasses. Not sexy.” She’s not alone: Tyler, The Creator recently came out against the glasses, calling them clothes for “a real weirdo.” Let us not forget the “glasshole” epidemic of 2013. Bring public shaming back, and with force!
