Low have shared the video for “Always Trying To Work it Out” off their most recent album Double Negative, out now through Sub Pop.
“Always Trying To Work it Out” follows Low’s video for “Poor Sucker,” in which singer Alan Sparhawk allowed his face to be the canvas for streaks of impressionistic paint. “Always Trying” features masks of a different sort, with the denizens of a grocery store through which Sparhawk is walking all donning paper cutouts of the figure that adorns the cover of Double Negative. Is it a comment on faceless consumerism? Is it a visual mirror to the way Low shape Sparhawk’s human voice into something closer to artifice? Is it just a fun Halloween video? Sparhawk says it’s “a slightly Halloween-themed video” in which “familiar fragments from memory appear; masks are filtering light.” So—all of the above? None? Who knows. Low might, but they’re not telling.
