M.I.A. Announces Release of Award-Winning Documentary Matangi / Maya / M.I.A

All she wants to do is *gunshot noise* *gunshot noise* *gunshot noise* and *cash register noise* and represent the people of Tamil. Sri Lankan-born, English-raised pop star Maya Arulpragasam, better known by her stage name M.I.A., is set to premiere her documentary in the States later this year, she announced on Wednesday, World Refugee Day.

Matangi / Maya / M.I.A, directed by Steve Loveridge, debuted at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year and received critical acclaim at both, winning Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award. The film chronicles all aspects of the rapper’s life, from her rise to fame to the more controversial moments in her early life and career. The film tells the story through home movies, many of which were taken by M.I.A herself.

In an interview with Deadline, Loveridge said, “It’s a film about trying to reestablish her reputation.” The film sees M.I.A as more than just a controversial musician, but as an activist, creative and proud Tamil woman.

The film is scheduled for release on Sept. 28 in the U.S. and Sept. 22 in the U.K. M.I.A. was also recently announced as one of the openers for Lauryn Hill’s upcoming Miseducation anniversary tour.
